Open Swim

The Norris Aquatics Center pool is the center of many activities including practice and meets for the varsity swim and dive teams, NU sports clubs and age group and masters swim teams.

In addition to group and private swim lessons for adults and children throughout the year, summer finds the pool teeming with camp participants.

We strive to maintain a balance among structured and non-structured pool activities.

LANE ASSIGNMENTS

A lap swimming schedule is posted each quarter listing how many lanes are open at a given time. The lane assignment schedule provides a more detailed list of pool activities throughout the day.

Unless the pool is closed for maintenance or an event, there will be several lanes available for open recreational swim.

TIPS FOR OPEN SWIMMING

Avoid crowds: If possible, swim on weekdays between 10a-2p, Saturday afternoons, or Sunday mornings.

Check the schedule: Pool hours differ from the gym. Be sure to check the pool hours and the pool closing schedule before you come to swim.

Share a lane: It's not always possible to have a lane to yourself. Split the lane in half when sharing with one other swimmer and circle swim when sharing with two or more.

Bring goggles: Need a pair? Goggles are available for sale at our proshop.

Use a locker: Free day lockers are available. Bring your own lock or check one out from our proshop.

Grab a towel: Bring your own or get a towel from our proshop.

Cover your feet: Wearing water shoes will protect your feet and help keep you steady when walking on wet tile.

Bring a hair tie: If you have long hair, you’ll want to tie it up or use a swim cap.

Shower first: A pre-pool shower rinses off sweat and skincare products, helping to keep the water clean. Shower after to remove chlorine and bacteria off of your skin and hair.

Use a non-glass water bottle: A glass water bottle can break and send sharp glass into the water.

Kickboards available: Check out the equipment cart near the shallow end to borrow kickboards and pull buoys.

Bring a plastic bag: Use it to store your damp swimsuit, towels, and water shoes until you can clean and dry them at home.
